The Director Receives Lifetime Achievement Award for Promoting Children’s Rights

The International Children’s Day is celebrated on November 20th with the aim of better understanding and acknowledging the importance of the children well-being. The UN General Assembly accepted the Declaration of the Rights of Children on November 20th 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of Child in 1989. Since November 20th, 1989, the International Children’s Day has been celebrated around the world, prompted by the United Nations Organization and its specialized institutions. By marking this day, the goal is to raise awareness of protecting all children from various forms of discrimination, abuse and violence.

As well as in previous years, the International Day of Children in the Ministry of Demography, Family, Youth and Social Policy has been celebrated with the award of the Children’s Rights Prize in 2018. , founded by the Croatian Parliament, awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award to Prof. Sc. D. Gordana Buljan Flander, Director of the Child and Youth Protection Centre. The annual awards were awarded to Denis Pavel and Kristina Čunović, who we kindly congratulate.

We are pleased that the Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded to our Director. In the explanation of this award it is stated that prof. dr. sc. Gordana Buljan Flander set a goal at the beginning of her career to make every child important, and she has been able to accomplish it in these 35 years of her professional and scientific work. In her longtime career, she distinguished herself in the field of clinical and health psychology and in promoting children’s rights, particularly in fighting violence against children and among children, as well as therapeutic work in mitigating consequences of violence against children. Over the years, she has invested her energy and her experience from working with children to raising public awareness, educating professionals who work with abused and neglected children, fostering co-operation between different professions and especially promoting future mental health professionals volunteer work.

When receiving this important award, prof. dr. sc. Gordana Buljan Flander thanked the members of the Board for the award and stressed that she considered the Lifetime Achievement Award at the same time the award of the Brave Phone and the Child and Youth Protection Center of Zagreb, which, from the very beginning started as first organizations of this kind and today are recognizable institutions in the country and in Europe. Professor Gordana Buljan Flander also thanked the City of Zagreb because this is also an award for City of Zagreb, which has always trusted her vision and her idea ​​how to protect children. She further emphasized that this was an award for all the collaborators with whom she collaborated in different periods of life and whose work was also embedded in this award. Prof. dr. sc. Buljan Flander said on this occasion that she cannot but mention thousands of children whose stories are embedded in this award, and that their trust in her work not only helped them but also enabled the help to other children. In conclusion, Buljan Flander said, “For me, this award is a stimulus and a sign that my country stands behind what I do and will continue to do that.”
