PROMISE 2: Center`s Professionals Invited to Sofia, Bulgaria in the Role of Educators  

Within the PROMISE 2 project, professionals from Bulgaria invited Director of Child and Youth Protection Center, Gordana Buljan Flander, PhD, and Center`s psychologist Ana Marija Spanic, to present the model of Child and Youth Protection Center of Zagreb and to conduct introductory training in working with sexually abused children and youth. Center`s professionals conducted a three-day training for around 30 participants on 28-30 October, experienced mental health experts from across Bulgaria.

Education on adolescent self injury held in Center

Our associates and colleagues, experts in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry and psychology, Jasminka Marković, MD and Jelena Srdanović Maraš, PhD, held an education at the Zagreb Child and Youth Protection Center on the topic "Adolescent self injury, practical guidelines for evaluation and therapeutic work" on October 18, 2019. With the presentation of new scientific knowledge in this field, there was also an opportunity to exchange experiences through discussion. Educators explained the difference between suicide attempts and non-suicidal self injury. Suicide attempts are intended for taking life, and in non-suicidal self injury there is no such intention. There are a number of reasons that cause adolescents to self-harm, which should be approached with caution.

Center’s Psychologist Held a Training in Ukraine on Interviewing Children Victims of Sexual Abuse and Human Trafficking

Center's psychologist Mia Roje Đapić held a two- day training named ,,Interviewing children victims of sexual abuse and human trafficking“ on 30th and 31st of October, 2019, in Kiev, Ukraine. Training was organized by Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) as a part of overall project of OSCE and Ukrainian Ministry in charge of fightning human trafficking. The training put a special importance on approaching victims and ethical way of obtaining information.

Center's psychologist-intern Krešimir Prijatelj held a lecture “Is it possible this is love?” for young people at the Ante Kovačić City Library in Zaprešić on October 13, 2019. In an interactive workshop, our intern tested youth's knowledge of violence in relationship and presented new scientific insights as well as practical guidance on adolescent dating violence.

8 things we can do right now to prevent child abuse

Today, November 19, marks the Day for Prevention of Child Abuse. Prevention is a term we talk a lot about, but we seem to act too little and not systematically. Prevention is based on science: there are thousands of scientific findings and practical examples on how to identify problems, how to create a prevention program, how to implement and evaluate it, how much benefits do successful prevention programs bring, both in human and economic sense. Research shows that every dollar invested in youth population prevention saves $30 - $5,000 in the future. However, these gains are long-term. They require consistent and systematic implementation, investment now to see results in far future - 10 or 20 years from now. Unsurprisingly, we don't put a lot of effort and money in prevention, living in a world of a constant rush, demanding results now and immediately, demanding proof of success today from yesterday's actions. But we should have.

The interest of the professional and the general public for the topic of alienation and emotional abuse of children in divorce is growing day by day, and the proof is an excellent response to Karen and Nick Woodall's lecture held in early July 2019 in Zagreb, organized by the Zagreb Child and Youth Protection Center and the Association of Youth Judges, Family Judges and Child and Youth Experts. After their lecture entitled ''Understanding and working with children and families affected by parental alienation: hearing the authentic voice of the child and intervening to help recovery'', a number of colleagues and parents contacted us, noting that what the world-renowned authorities teach what the law and international regulations say, and what follows from thousands of scientific papers, have no real practical application in Croatia.

The lecturers were Karen and Nick Woodall, internationally recognized authorities in area of alienation, partners in Family Separation Clinic in London, who, engaged in daily close cooperation with social welfare, health and justice systems, work on the issue of alienation.
