The doyen of paediatric psychiatry in Croatia, Dubravka Kocijan Hercigonja Associated Professor said that violence in youth relationship, the least spoken about, had permanent consequences which influence relationships developing later:
“Perpetrators are not born, but created. Today, we are working with children witnessing or experiencing family violence. A large number of these children have parents who were in violent relationships as adolescents, but did not know who to ask for help, repeating the pattern of violent behaviour today. Helping the youth to get out of violent relationships, we are helping future generations, because family violence is transgenerational.”
