A report by journalist Srna Bijuk on the breakthrough of coronavirus into the Psychiatric Hospital for Children and Adolescents in Zagreb was published in the Daily News of Nova TV on April 9, 2020. Several staff members of the psychiatric children’s hospital in Zagreb fell ill with the coronavirus, and the hospital itself still houses ten children. According to the latest information, all their findings are negative. They are cared for by a small number of doctors and medical staff, as they remained in self-isolation, and doctors at the Zagreb Child and Youth Protection Center are now on duty at the hospital. About that situation they spoke with director of Zagreb Child and Youth Protection Center, professor Gordana Buljan Flander, PhD:
“I was informed that no child is positive, five employees are positive and one part of them is in isolation. Our two psychiatrists are also on duty with children, I am convinced that all the staff have already taken care of the children. I do not know in detail how the children are, but I suppose that each of them was cared for and that each child received individual information, adapted to condition” told professor Gordana Buljan Flander, director of the Zagreb Child and Youth Protection Center on the Daily News of Nova TV.
73 people under the age of 20 are infected in Croatia, 33 of them under the age of 10. The youngest patient in Croatia is only 2.5 months old.
Buljan Flander points out that isolation surely affects all children: “Children have a natural need to move, it is certain that this situation frustrates them and they certainly feel anxiety. The most important thing now is to provide them with stability and a sense of future. It is very important for them to have a routine, to do the same things, to have stability. It is also very important to give them the opportunity to say how they feel, to give them the opportunity to express their fears and concerns, ”she explained.
“Young children should be talked about in a tailored and concrete way, explaining to them that they are not guilty of anything, because young children feel they are responsible for everything that happens around them. Adolescents should be interviewed according to their age. Appreciate that they already have certain information by now and research along with it. They have the feeling that nothing can happen to them, but if we pay attention to other people, their grandparents will have a sense of solidarity and will watch them socialize and behave, ”says Buljan Flander.
She explained that after all that we are experiencing, she expects increased anxiety and insecurity in children, especially those who have experienced an earthquake: “It is very important that parents talk to children now and have a little more patience for them. We are all under pressure now, both parents and children ”
