On Zadar Sexuality Days: What To Do When a Child Confides in Us

Organized by the Association of Psychology Students of the University of Zadar “Kasper”, the 9th Sexuality Days were held at the Rector’s Palace from May 15th to 18th, 2019. Psychologist Mia Roje Đapić held an invited lecture on the topic “What to do when a child confides in us”, and talked about child sexual abuse and the importance of professional’s response to disclosing abuse and giving children a chance to recover rather than retraumatize them when talking about their difficult experiences.

After that, a workshop was held where a small number of interested students and professionals had the opportunity to improve their interviewing skills with the abused child through discussion and video presentation. Center’s experts congratulate young colleagues on organizing a high quality, highly attended and media covered event, but above all we support the initiative to include the topic of child sexual abuse in gatherings for general and professional public. Research shows that every fifth child is sexually abused, and one of the best predictors of a child’s recovery is the environmental response to its disclosure, so sensitizing and educating future young mental health professionals on this topic is of great importance.
