Special Representative of the UN Secretary General on Violence against Children (SRSG), in cooperation with Council of Europe, convened a Cross-Regional Meeting (CRM) on violence against children and invited the Director of Child Protection Center of Zagreb Assoc. Prof. Gordana Buljan Flander, PhD, to speak as an expert at the cross-regional meeting.
The high level cross-regional meeting was held in Strasbourg, France, on 18 – 19 June 2015, with the thematic focus on the elimination of sexual violence against children. The aim of the meeting was to assess the progress of regional organizations and institutions achieved so far, to reflect on trends and common concerns, as well as to share planned initiatives and identify opportunities for cross-regional cooperation. This meeting also allowed regional organizations from across the globe to mutually support progress in dealing with violence against children and to share legal and other implementation initiatives promoted to fight violence against children.
Regional representatives and experts discussed prevention and elimination of sexual violence and exploitation of children, sharing strategies, policy frameworks legislation, good practices and challenges in specific regions. This exchange benefited from the contribution of international experts, including experts working in regional bodies such as the Lanzarote Committee which is monitoring the Council of Europe Convention on the protection of children against sexual exploitation and sexual abuse, also known as the Lanzarote Convention, as well as the Cybercrime Convention Committee which is evaluating the implementation of the Council of Europe Budapest Convention on Cybercrime.
Ms Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Ms Marta Santos Pais, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Violence against Children and Ms Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, UN Special Rapporteur on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography, officially opened the cross-regional meeting with their valuable contributions.
Thematic sessions were organized in three parts, with thematic session 1 covering sexual abuse of children in the circle of trust, thematic session 2 on protection of children from sexual abuse through information and communication technologies and thematic session 3 with emphasis on strengthening international cooperation for the protection of children from sexual violence.
Assoc. Prof. Gordana Buljan Flander, PhD, was invited as the expert to make a presentation on challenges in providing child friendly justice and treatment for child victims of sexual abuse in the circle of trust, during which she addressed current knowledge and experiences regarding child friendly justice and treatment of child victims od sexual abuse within the circle of trust, and shared the experiences of Child Protection Center of Zagreb. Ms Ana Marija Spanic, psychologist working in Child Protection Center of Zagreb, also participated as the expert at the cross-regional meeting. This opportunity connected stakeholders from different world regions including Asia, Africa, Europe and USA, who shared valuable practices and approached challenges within the context of protection of children from sexual violence.
