This year the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports and Child Protection Center of Zagreb have decided to join in marking the Safer Internet Day by organizing a workshop for children and youth named „Growing up in cyberspace: Click for a safer future“.
Safer Internet Day (SID) is organized by Insafe in February of each year to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially among children and young people across the world. The 12th Safer Internet Day will be celebrated worldwide on Tuesday 10 February 2015, once more with the strapline of “Let’s create a better internet together”, following the success of last year’s campaign.
A recent research by Brave Phone and Child Protection Center of Zagreb has shown that 99% of Croatian children and youth have Internet access, while as much as 93% of them reported having a profile on the Facebook social network. Using modern communication technologies has become an integral part of the process of growing up. Rapid advances in technology have made this a time of many opportunities, but also of great risks, which we must face together. That includes the collaboration of all adults involved in children`s lives, but also listening to the voices of children and youth.
The announced workshop will provide an opportunity for the participants to explore their habits in using electronic media, and their perception of the advantages and risks present in the cyberspace. Within an interactive environment the participants will try to provide solutions to some of the questions we often encounter in our efforts to confront cyberbullying, as well as explore their own role and responsibility in creating a safer future in cyberspace.
