Diane Cranley, the founder of the non-profit organisation TAALK (Talk About Abuse to Liberate Kids), whose main aim is the prevention and protection of children from sexual abuse, organised the 24 hour internet radio show with recognised expert speakers from around the world who have been working with sexually abused children, developing child sexual abuse prevention programs, working with the police and the judiciary raising awareness of the child sexual abuse problem; kao i same žrtve sexualnog zlostavljanja. - what the heck is this? The 34th STAR (Stress and Anxiety Research Society) Conference was held on July 1-3, 2013, at the University of Algarve in Faro, Portugal. Center’s psychology interns, Tea Brezinšćak and Ana Marija Španić, actively participated at the Conference with a poster presentation “Trauma related symptoms among children exposed to different types of abuse and neglect“.
The Stress and Anxiety Research Society (STAR) is a multi-disciplinary, international organization of researchers who share their interest in theoretical, experimental and applied aspects of anxiety, stress, and coping. Its members, from over 40 countries, meet annually to present and exchange research findings and clinical applications on a wide range of stress and anxiety related phenomena.
Several main themes of this year’s conference were the following:
• Trauma and post-traumatic stress
• Anxiety and somatic diseases
• Stress and health in education and work settings
• Health behavior, and coping with illness
• Neuropsychology of stress and anxiety
• Methodology of anxiety and stress research
Some of the keynote speakers at the conference were Johan Denollet, professor of Medical Psychology at Tilburg University, the Netherlands, with a lecture on social inhibition, personality and cardiovascular outcomes, Américo Baptista, head of the Psychological Clinic for Personal Development in Lisabon, Portugal, with a lecture on new challenges for stress and anxiety researchers, emphasizing on positive emotions research, Esther Greenglass, professor of psychology at York University in Toronto, Canada, whose presentation focused on stress and coping in difficult economic times, and Roxane Cohen Silver, professor at the University of California, Irvine, USA, well known for her research on consequences of traumatic events and stress, who presented the results of the research regarding coping with life’s personal and collective tragedies.
