The 4the Croatian Psychodermatology Congress with international participation was organised by the Croatian Dermatovenerology Society of the Croatian Medical Chamber, the Clinic for Skin and Venereal Diseases of the Clinical Hospital “Sestre Milosrdnice” and the City of Zagreb. The Congress was held under the auspices of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in the Westin hotel in Zagreb, from 10 to 12 June 2016.

Zagreb city mayor Milan Bandić opened the Congress. Twenty-eight participants from Croatia, Europe and India participated at the Congress.

“The fact that Zagreb hosts such an important Congress for the second time, shows that our city is on the map of European medical excellence and proof that it is a European metropolis in all its aspects,” said the mayor Bandić,

Director of the Child Protection Centre of Zagreb, prof. Psy.D. Gordana Buljan Flander was invited to deliver the plenary lecture after the opening of the Congress. In her lecture “How I See Myself and How I Think Others See Me”, she presented theoretical and findings of contemporary research about the self-image and social perception, especially regarding children suffering from dermatological diseases and conditions.

Prof. Psy.D. Gordana Buljan Flander presented findings of research conducted with children suffering from chronic dermatoses, by interviewing them about various aspects of their lives.

“Children’s words taught us, professionals, a lot,” said the director. She highlighted the importance of educating the public and the cross-sectoral co-operation in protecting children with chronic dermatoses. She also empahisised that research results show that these children need psychological help and support and invited the relevant institutions to provide such services for children.
