Emotional abuse: Forms, consequences and treatment

According to a survey of the prevalence of child abuse and neglect conducted in 2006 (Zagreb Child and Youth Protection Center and Brave Phone), 16.5% of children experienced emotional abuse. However, it is very difficult to estimate the exact prevalence of emotional abuse in the population since it involves a wide range of behaviors and there is no clear definition of it. Defining the meaning of child abuse and neglect, it is important to take into account two assessments: parental/carer behaviours on one, and impact on the child on the other hand. Child abuse includes everything individuals, institutions or processes do or fail to do, which directly or indirectly harms the child or imposes risks for his/her healthy and safe development into adulthood.
