News After successful regional conference in Linköping and previous exchange meetings in Zagreb and Reykjavik, on 13-14 March 2017 professionals from around Europe came to Haarlem where the third Service Exchange Meeting of the PROMISE project was held. The key theme of the meeting was transfer and adaptation of the project model: the next steps, specifically focusing on promoting MD/IA with linking policy and practice – current practices and challenges in implementing child friendly practices within the child protection systems, implementation in different national contexts and MD/IA services becoming active agents for change in Europe.

Matej Ilić Buljan s Brave Phone Volunteer Wins the Volunteer Oscar for 2016.

News The eighth award for the best Zagreb volunteer was held in the City Hall. The winner was a long time volunteer of the Brave Phone, Matej Ilić Buljan. News Bichon Havanese dogs Evie and Heidi, trained for the needs of children and youth of the socially vulnerable groups (AAI, AAT), have been working with a certified dog guide Renata Fridrih, educator – speech therapist, since 21 March 2017. The dogs were trained according to the holistic approach where the dog is in partnership with the guide, and their behaviour signals children's needs while participating in working with them. Dogs work individually, in pairs and in groups of children. Their work in the project is conducted on the principle one dog – more clients.

News The Fifth congress of psychologists of Bosnia and Herzegovina with international participation was held in Sarajevo from 2 to 4 March 2017. They presented the results of the pilot study of the knowledge of helping professions students about child abuse in Croatia and their way of attributing blame and responsibility for child abuse.

News Director Prof. Sc.D. Gordana Buljan Flander and members of our Center's multidisciplinary team held a meeting with the director of Center for Social Welfare (CSW) of Zagreb, Tatjana Brozić Perić, and the heads of all subsidiaries CSW Zagreb on 14 February 2017 in the The Child and Youth Protection Center of Zagreb.These meetings are part of the common cooperation between the Center and CSW Zagreb to improve the already existing good practice in protecting the best interest of children. About 40% of children who are involved in the assessment and treatment in the Center come on the recommendation of the relevant social welfare centers so the cooperation between the institutions and a system as a whole is necessary. So far, cooperation was rated good and takes place directly through the contacts between experts and joint action.

Emotional support to the families of children with developmental disabilities

Stresfull events Topics The moment parents are informed that their child has been born with or has acquired some developmental disability is remembered, because it is something which completely changes family life in the long run. Every parent experiences a process of mourning and abandoning fantasies about the child held before, all in a very short period of time. Then there is the phase of recovery and adjustment to new circumstances of family life. Various studies showed that timely counselling and informing about the nature of their child's disability, as well as about the possibilities of recovery and education, significantly reduce parental stress and their concerns and help them in the process of adjustment to raising their child.

News Training for professionals under the title "Manipulation of Children in Parental Divorce" was held in the Social Welfare Centre of Split on 23 and 24 January 2017. Training included topics like high conflict divorce, methods of manipulating the child, parental alienation and psychological mechanisms underlining such behaviours, focusing attention on children's needs and on what professionals could do to protect children's best interests. News As part of the Child Protection Hub SSE project, a training which dealt with the best interests of the child victims of sexual violence was held in Budapest from 21 to 22 of December. The training brought together professionals from 9 countries – Croatia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Hungary, Moldova, Romania and Serbia. Queen Silvia with PROMISE project board and experts PROMISE PROJECT:Regional Conference and Study Visit held in Linköping, Sweden

News On 28-29 November 2016, professionals from around Europe came in Linköping to gather inspiration to launch an innovative way to support child victims of violence in their own countries. The conference and study visit took place over one and a half days, gathering practitioners, national authorities, NGOs and regional bodies from across Europe. The objectives of the conference included to facilitate regional exchange of good practice and to build a strong European movement for multi-disciplinary and inter-agency services, which embody international and regional legal obligations. Director of Child Protection Center, Gordana Buljan Flander, PhD, and Center`s psychologist Ana Marija Španić joined the conference and the study visit. The first day was dedicated to the conference, including presentations from key experts in the area. The second day was dedicated to a study visit at Barnahus Linköping.

Trauma of Abuse: Important to Have in Mind

Abused child There is a number of definitions of child abuse and neglect (medical, psychological, social-protective, legal). Defining the meaning of child abuse and neglect, it is important to take into account two assessments: parental/carer behaviours on one, and impact on the child on the other hand. GROWING UP ON THE INTERNET: Restoring childhood safety

Challenge of parenting Nowadays generations of children and youth are growing up immersed in the virtual world. Their constant connection to the Internet has been confirmed by a recent study conducted by the Brave Phone and the Child Protection Centre of Zagreb. It shows that 99% of the youth have an access to the Internet, and that as many of them as 84% access the Internet via their mobile phones. High percentage (93) of children have a profile on Facebook, and 68% of them opened a profile before they were 13.
