News The theme for the 17th Informal ASEM (Asia-Europe Foundation) Seminar on Human Rights was “Human Rights and Children”. Hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria, the event took place on 7-9 November 2017 in Sofia, Bulgaria, bringing together civil society experts and government representatives from 51 Asian and European countries, the European Union and the ASEAN Secretariat, to discuss the promotion and protection of the rights of the child.

News Center’s director, prof. dr. sc. Gordana Buljan Flander participated as one of consultants in education of professionals in Montenegro. The objective of the consultancy was to provide technical assistance to the Ministry of Justice of Montenegro for the development of the training material and delivery of the training for diverse group of professionals who applied to obtain a license to work as a Support Persons to the Child (in Family Law related proceedings). As consultants, besides prof.dr.sc. Gordana Buljan Flander from Croatia, participated also prof.dr.sc. Nevena Perušić and prof.dr.sc. Nevena Vučković Šahović from Serbia.

psihosoc Lecture on psycho-social help for children whose family members suffer from chronic diseases

News Conference organised by the Association helping individuals suffering from ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) and other rare diseases and the "Neuron" Clinic was held on 28 September 2017. The aim of the Conference was promoting and improving patients' rights. Besides the family members of these patients, representatives of Croatian Insurance, local community, as well as the Disability Ombudsman were present.

News Director of Child and Youth Protection Center, prof. dr. sc. Gordana Buljan Flander held a training course for directors of the Social Welfare Centres in Slovenia, held in Portorož on 5 October. Prof. dr. sc. Buljan Flander gave a lecture about divorces with emphasis on high-conflict divorce. Directors have pointed out that experts at the Centers for Social Welfare in Slovenia work more and more with parents and children from high-conflict divorces and also expressed the problems encountered in practice.

Center`s director prof. Gordana Buljan Flander and psychologist trainee Ana Raguž participated at the conference. Director of Child and Youth Protection Center of Zagreb, prof. Gordana Buljan Flander, PhD, was invited to give a presentation „Forensic Interview with children victims of criminal offenses - Psychological and Legal Aspects“, as part of the lecture was shown NICHD protocol of conducting interviews with child victims and witnesses in investigations.

When does the child need the help of a mental professional?

Director's note We have noticed that parents sometimes hesitate to seek professional help for their child and their family. In our culture, contacting a psychologist or a psychiatrist is sometimes seen in a negative light. Parents may be judged by others that something is wrong with them or with their child, that they are unable to solve the problem themselves, and similar. Such attitudes may cause the parents to feel shame and resistance, they may develop anger towards their child who 'causes problems' and parents may start taking their child's psychological difficulties personally.

Director's note At the time of our grandparents, it was only a TV set, and only for those who could afford it. Today, there are so many screens around us that professionals cannot count them. That is the reason why the expression Screen Time has been introduced. It is the total time someone spends in front of a screen, be it a TV set, laptop, PC, mobile phone, tablet, video game console, or something else. Besides the time we spend in front of screens, we are surrounded by them all the time, whether we want it or not. Screens around us overwhelm our everyday lives with screen saturation, which is another important notion in this study area.

slov Professionals From Slovenia Visit Our Centre Within the Project “Minor’s Counsel – the Voice Of the Child”

News Professionals from Slovenia (psychologists, social workers, social educators) visited the Child and Youth Protection Centre on 15 September 2017. They participate in the project "Minor's Counsel – the Voice Of the Child" (in Slovenian: "Zagovornik – glas otroka") led since 2007 by Tone Dolčić from the Office of Slovenian Children's Advocate. The aim of the project is developing a network of counsels who would represent children in the society in various circumstances when it is important that children's voice be heard.
