Convention on the Rights of the Child

Your rights are what you may do and what those who are responsible for you must do so that you can be happy, healthy and safe. You also have responsibilities towards other children and adults so that they have their rights granted..
For parents

The majority of women and men associate the meaning of 'being a parent' with happiness, pleasure, mutual love and the fulfillment of a deep human need to give and receive love and care. The relationship parent - child is strong emotional experience. However, parenting is one of the most demanding roles in one's life.

Therefore, since long ago, we have recognised and acknowledged the ambivalent feelings arising from parenting, and the psychological price it has for the individual.

Generally speaking, there are common parenting goals related to ensuring child's health, teaching the child skills which will ensure safety and independence and which will develop those characteristics which are considered to be virtues in the given context.

'It is a fact that each of us, individually, must find his own mode of behaviour, mode which is most successful for us and for our children…' (J. Jull, Your Competent Child)

left_quotemark.gifA parent places a child in the middle when the child is asked to be a carrier of adult messages, asked to keep secrets, or asked to serve as a spy in the other household. When a parent trashes the other parent to the child, half of that child is being trashed also. Such issues take their toll on a child's self-esteem and sense  of well-being. Any movement along the continuum from conflict to cooperation, no matter how small, is a move to benefit the child.
